Role overview
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to global enterprise and technology markets, with Ubuntu being widely used in public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT. The company is founder-led, profitable and growing, with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person for company events in interesting locations around the world. We are hiring engineers to work across four key teams: Foundations (architectures, package managers, compilers, toolchains, bootloaders, filesystems and core utilities), Server (Ubuntu Server distribution), Desktop (Ubuntu Core Desktop, WSL, gaming technology, modern applications with Flutter), and Debcrafters (archive maintenance and health). Engineers integrate open source software, provide robust upgrade paths and engineer Ubuntu's future. The role is suitable for engineers at a mid-career point, not yet at Manager/Lead level.
Responsibilities
- Design, build and ship new foundational systems software and applications in Rust, Go, Flutter, and Python
- Engineer the integration of open source from boot firmware to cloud applications deployment
- Combine Debian and Snap packaging to ship software in the distribution
- Build and maintain machinery responsible for building, testing and shipping Ubuntu
- Maintain and evolve a Linux distribution and its repositories
- Debug system-level issues and deliver robust solutions
- Author and improve technical and community documentation
- Contribute to upstream and neighboring open source projects
- Collaborate as part of a globally distributed team
- Mentor colleagues to build skills and understanding
- Develop and improve processes to more efficiently fulfill goals
- Travel twice a year for company events up to two weeks each
- Attend twice-yearly in-person team sprints in interesting locations around the world
- Contribute to Ubuntu's broader open source community
Requirements
- Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about alternative path
- At least 2 to 4 years of professional software engineering experience post University
- Drive and a track record of going above and beyond expectations
- Demonstrated passion for open source software
- Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C/C++
- Professional written and spoken English
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Nice to have
- Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering
- Experience with software packaging and distribution mechanisms
- Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including for cross-compilation
- Performance or Security Engineering experience
