Role overview
Emergent Software seeks a Senior Software QA Engineer to own quality for complex, data-driven web applications and websites. This 100% remote role involves collaborating with developers, product owners, and clients throughout agile projects. Ideal candidates are self-starters with strong communication skills and a passion for solving complex problems through software solutions.
Responsibilities
- Build test coverage aligned with project risk and communicate tradeoffs to stakeholders
- Participate in backlog refinement and define testable acceptance criteria
- Plan test cases for user stories and features with agile teams
- Collaborate with developers during sprints to catch and resolve defects early
- Execute hands-on testing against acceptance criteria
- Coordinate regression testing and client testing (using automation judiciously)
- Maintain visible/current quality status for leads, product owners, and clients
- Evaluate mid-project changes for testing impact
- Estimate QA effort, track time, and flag coverage/budget conflicts
- Improve QA processes for efficiency and reliability
- Explore/apply AI-assisted testing tools and share effective techniques
- Coordinate User Acceptance Testing (UAT) with clients, explaining quality status non-technically
- Support multiple client projects simultaneously (active builds to maintenance work)
Requirements
- Agile team experience as a Quality Engineer, owning test strategy/execution end-to-end
- Judgment for balancing automation vs. manual testing investments
- Experience writing comprehensive test plans/cases and adapting to changing requirements
- High-level understanding of websites, web apps, APIs, databases, mobile/Windows apps, and cloud
- Ability to manage multiple client projects with varying testing needs
- Experience working within scoped budgets/billable hours
- Strong attention to detail and collaborative problem-solving skills
- Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills
Nice to have
- Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO), Jira, or similar agile tools
- AI application for test design, data generation, or defect analysis
- Test automation experience (especially Playwright)
- Large project test planning experience
- Consulting experience (independent or firm)
- Microsoft stack familiarity (C#, .NET, SQL Server, Azure)
- Content management system experience (e.g., Umbraco)
- Software development experience
