Role overview
Toast is scaling rapidly and seeks an Engineering Manager to join its FinTech organization’s Payments team in Bengaluru. This role involves leading a team dedicated to building Toast’s next-generation payments ecosystem and innovative FinTech capabilities. Toast’s platform processes billions in payments and supports restaurants with a cutting-edge point-of-sale system, focusing on extensibility, resilience, and scalability. The Engineering Manager will drive technical architecture, deliver high-impact projects, and coach teams to success while ensuring the reliability of services critical to Toast’s operations and users.
Responsibilities
- Drive overall technical architecture, design, build and launch features/improvements on our platform.
- Deliver high-impact complex projects that may span multiple teams and amplify impact by aligning organizations toward coherent architectural strategies
- Drive delivery of business outcomes across multiple teams, including planning and execution
- Collaborate closely with Product Management and UX to get actionable, valuable work defined for the team
- Ensure end-to-end delivery of software, including team ownership of monitoring and production issue remediation
- Coach individuals in professional and technical development to set up for their success
- Hire and mentor Team Leads and Senior Technical Staff members to ensure their success at Toast
Requirements
- Fintech products solution design, implementation at launch at scale
- 10+ years mentoring and growing successful teams
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other equivalent quantitative disciplines
- 5+ years of managing, coaching and growing successful teams
- Highly proficient knowledge in a high-level programming language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, etc.
- Excellent knowledge in other parts of the stack, Postgres, JavaScript (React), Flutter
- Experience working in a team with Agile/Scrum methodology
- Have knowledge of and experience in building backend services/APIs
- Have a strong understanding of software engineering, distributed systems, and Event Platforms gained from hands-on experience building fault-tolerant and secure applications.
- You have experience working with product teams to invent solutions that deliver good outcomes to our customers and the company
- A bias towards action, with the ability to balance between getting things done and making things perfect
- A strong sense of empathy for customers and teammates
- A desire to build a diverse team that wins together and prioritizes customer success

- The Toast platform processes tens of millions of requests per day, and this number grows constantly as we add new restaurants and integration partners to our system. The services we develop on this team are essential for Toast’s operation and their resilience and reliability are crucial from a business and user perspective.
- Our products run on a stack that ranges from guest and restaurant-facing Android tablets to backend services in Java to internal, guest-facing and restaurant-facing web apps. Our backend services follow a microservice architecture written using Java and Kotlin on DropWizard; we use AWS extensively, ranging from S3 to RDS to DynamoDB to Lambda. We have our own platform for dealing with service elevations and robust load balancing. We store data in PostgreSQL databases or DynamoDB tables depending on use case, and utilize Apache Spark for large scale data workloads including query and batch processing. The web frontend is built using React and ES6. Our restaurant point of sale application is an Android application written in Java and Kotlin. Apache Pulsar and Camel are used extensively in our integration transaction workflow processing.
