Role overview
Mactores is an agent-native AWS modernization firm dedicated to delivering production modernization outcomes, avoiding the common pitfalls of stalled pilots, slipped timelines, and 3x budget overruns that plague most modernization projects. The firm leverages Aedeon, an agent platform built by its founders' sister company, to automate 60-70% of repetitive engagement work (discovery, dependency mapping, validation, test generation) so forward-deployed engineers can focus on high-value architecture, judgment, and cutover work tied to committed delivery dates. This freelance DevOps role sits within the Application & Database Modernization pillar, where you will support customer deployments to migrate legacy enterprise infrastructure and big data workloads to AWS, build scalable cloud platforms, and deliver client-facing automation and reliability engineering to meet agreed-upon project goals.
Responsibilities
- Automate infrastructure creation using Terraform and AWS CloudFormation
- Run application configuration management and enable Infrastructure as Code through deployment tools
- Own and manage the build and release cycle for customer projects
- Share responsibility for deploying releases and other operations and maintenance activities
- Improve operations infrastructure including Jenkins clusters, Bitbucket, Consul monitoring tools, and Graphite and Grafana metrics tools
- Provide operational support for the engineering team and help migrate legacy infrastructure to the cloud
- Establish and enforce operational best practices, including monitoring for automated system health checks
- Build scalable infrastructure for data platforms including Amazon EMR, Redshift, and SageMaker
- Build the CI pipeline, and train and guide the team in DevOps practices
- Set and meet customer expectations as part of client-facing work on customer deployments for enterprise applications, customer applications, and big data workloads
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience using Terraform for Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- 4+ years of configuration management and engineering experience for large-scale customers, ideally supporting an Agile development process
- 4+ years of Linux or Windows administration experience
- 4+ years of experience with version control systems (git), including branching and merging strategies
- 2+ years of experience working with AWS infrastructure and platform services
- 2+ years of experience with cloud automation tools (Ansible, Chef)
- Proactive ability to identify reliability improvement opportunities and follow through to implement them
Nice to have
- Expertise across multiple cloud providers: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform
- AWS Solutions Architect Professional or Associate certification
- AWS DevOps Professional certification
Additional details
- Mactores is an agent-native AWS modernization firm that focuses on shipping production modernization outcomes (running production systems, retired legacy, measured outcomes) instead of letting projects stall in pilots, slip timelines, or exceed 3x budget
- Mactores' delivery model is built on Aedeon, an agent platform built by the founders' sister company, which automates 60-70% of repetitive engagement work including discovery, dependency mapping, validation, and test generation that traditional consulting bills human hours against
- The role operates under the Application & Database Modernization pillar, with a focus on migrating legacy infrastructure and large enterprise workloads to AWS and making the resulting platforms low-effort to operate
- Typical customers have hand-built environments, release cycles dependent on heroics, and big data workloads with monitoring that has not kept up with growth
- Aedeon absorbs the discovery and validation workload, so the role's billed hours are dedicated to automation and reliability engineering rather than repetitive checklist work
- The role uses a forward-deployed model: engineers embed with delivery teams, own their piece of the outcome, and ship work against dates committed in contracts
- This is a remote freelance engagement, with work scheduled project-by-project; the engineer will work independently, coordinate closely with the engagement team, and their automation will carry production traffic for named customers
- Mactores' work culture is guided by 10 Core Leadership Principles: 1. Be one step ahead, 2. Deliver the best, 3. Be bold, 4. Pay attention to the detail, 5. Enjoy the challenge, 6. Be curious and take action, 7. Take leadership, 8. Own it, 9. Deliver value, 10. Be collaborative
- The recruitment process has three distinct stages: Pre-Employment Assessment (series of evaluations of technical proficiency and role suitability), Managerial Interview (multiple 30-minute to 1-hour discussions with the hiring manager covering technical skills, hands-on experience, leadership potential, and communication), and HR Discussion (30-minute session to discuss the offer and next steps with an HR team member)
- Mactores provides equal employment opportunities in all employment practices, with no discrimination based on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital status, military status, genetic information, or any other category protected by federal, state, and local laws, across all aspects of the employment relationship including recruitment, compensation, promotions, transfers, disciplinary action, layoff, training, and social and recreational programs
- Applicants are advised to answer as many application questions as possible to accelerate the hiring process
- The role was originally posted on the Himalayas platform
