Role overview
Design authority for an engineering discipline with low to medium complexity. The role involves leading engineering activities for small projects or portions of larger projects, ensuring cost-effectiveness, contract compliance, quality standards, and safety requirements. The position serves as the single point of contact (SPOC) for customers, coordinates engineering teams, and drives technical and process improvements while adhering to Hitachi Energy’s core values of safety and integrity.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the design authority for all engineering activities for assignments on projects classified as Low and Medium engineering complexity.
- Support the Project Manager for any technical issues.
- Act as the SPOC with customers for Engineering activities of the project, including participating in customer meetings, addressing customer needs, expectations, and improving customer experience.
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate the engineering project team: scope, schedule & progress, approvals, budget, targets, resource load & cost-to-complete (Engineering Meetings / Engineering Review).
- Ensure Engineering processes are applied and, if needed, agree on scaling with the Engineering Manager.
- Conduct Engineering Project Reviews and report progress and cost-to-complete to Engineering and Project Managers.
- Establish contacts with suppliers for technical support, to improve material quality and/or to decrease costs.
- Obtain prototype products and develop technical tests.
- Ensure deliveries as per schedule and carry out regular reviews.
- Deliver transmission and distribution projects, prepare standards, and focus on continuous improvements both technically and functionally.
- Coach and develop project engineers/designers to deliver their maximum potential and plan skill development needs for the engineers.
- Check if quality processes are applied by all contributing engineering parties, escalate to QA/QC, and track and handle technical issues and follow-ups.
- Handle clarifications where more than one domain/function/party is concerned or topics that cannot be allocated to an engineering domain.
- Initiate mitigation of possible responsibility gaps in the project team.
- Identify, track, clarify, and drive project change cases that relate to engineering scope.
- Support claim preparation (client & supplier) and initiate and drive corrective actions.
- Collect and consolidate project risks and opportunities from the engineering team (technical, engineering progress, information/data availability, and assumptions taken).
- Define, coordinate, and take proactive actions to mitigate risks and lead to opportunities, including follow-ups.
- Take calculated risks in pursuit of results and speed.
- Ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

- Based on technical specifications from end customers and inputs from the OU Engineering team, prepare: Protection & Principle SLD, Schematics, Power supply scheme, Substation layouts – plan & sections, Standard technical specifications for major equipment.
- Conduct R&D activities to improve the work process.
- Perform comparisons between AIS, GIS & PASS solutions, including cost comparisons between different solutions.
- Prepare Bill of Materials, RFQs, vet vendor offers, estimate engineering hours, and perform technical risk assessments and opportunity evaluations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 10-15 years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of primary equipment, such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches, instrument transformers, power transformers, etc.
- Knowledge of HV grid power systems.
- Know-how on design calculations related to Substation Engineering.
- Knowledge of relevant international standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC).
- Knowledge of substation tendering and project engineering activities (technical & commercial).
- Ability to provide optimized and customized solutions for various substation tenders (AIS, GIS, Hybrid, MoSS).
- Good understanding of civil and structural design elements of substations (e.g., transformer bunds, cable troughs, ducts, support structures, substation access roads, etc.).
- Ability to prepare, review, and validate Bill of Materials for tenders or projects based on requirements.
- Know-how on design calculations related to Primary Engineering and grounding system design, drawings, and Bill of Material.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency in required CAD design tools (Autodesk Revit).
- Proficiency in required Engineering calculation tools.
