Role overview
As a Senior Software Engineer on the fully distributed Starburst Galaxy Reliability, Scalability, & Efficiency team, you’ll own the reliability, scalability, and efficiency (performance/$) of Starburst Galaxy IaaS/SaaS as we grow. You will help design and build core infrastructure around Trino for the Galaxy Product itself, as well as build 'the machine that builds the machine' used to operate our SaaS at scale. Daily tasks include developing backend infrastructure, building operational tooling, supporting the product in production, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of Starburst Galaxy. The role spans Core Infrastructure (owning APIs for provisioning/upgrading cloud infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and GCP), Delivery & Enablement (enabling engineering iteration with CI/CD and developer tooling), and Observability (providing tooling and infrastructure for introspection and administration of the product).
Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of Starburst Galaxy service
- Design and build the core operational infrastructure of the Starburst Galaxy service following the immutable cloud infrastructure paradigm
- Continuously improve engineering processes, tests, and systems to scale the codebase and team productivity
- Provide considerate and timely review of peers' pull requests and design proposals
- Own the APIs for provisioning and upgrading cloud infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and GCP
- Enable the engineering organization to iterate on Galaxy confidently with maximum velocity and minimum disruption
- Own continuous delivery and tooling to provision and maintain developer environments
- Provide comprehensive tooling and underlying infrastructure primitives for introspection and administration of Starburst Galaxy
- Modify both Trino and Starburst Galaxy services to maximize introspection
- Own infrastructure that ensures relevant data is surfaced accessibly to internal and external customers
- Support the product in production
- Drive collaboration with various stakeholders around reliability, scalability, and efficiency
Requirements
- Passion for software engineering, with an interest in Infrastructure Engineering in particular
- Cloud infrastructure architecture and orchestration experience
- Experience developing software in Java and Typescript
- Experience with infrastructure as code and related tooling such as Pulumi or Terraform
- Demonstration of ownership, grit, and bias for action
- Ability to travel occasionally for purposes including new hire onboarding, team offsites, customer engagements, and company events

- Prior experience in developing for or operating Trino
