The founder-led, profitable, and growing company is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a regional team of Python engineers focused on building next-generation infrastructure-as-code and model-driven operations tools to transform software operations. The initiative requires inventing new technology and building new products to support use cases including high-performance computing, private cloud, data lakes, AI/ML, and analytics. The role supports the Solutions Engineering team, which works closely with Canonical’s managed infrastructure operations group that runs global private OpenStack clouds and Kubernetes clusters for customers, to develop open-source Python automation that simplifies DevOps workflows for Ubuntu users. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, people development, and strategic input to drive the team’s work, with the opportunity to influence culture, facilitate technical delivery, and collaborate with the team on direction and execution.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a team of Python engineers working remotely in global locations
- Handle hiring, coaching, mentoring, providing feedback, and hands-on career development for team members
- Demonstrate sound engineering principles by directly contributing code to projects
- Plan and manage progress on agreed team goals and projects
- Set and manage expectations with cross-functional engineering and operations teams
- Coordinate with management, internal and external stakeholders, and customers
- Advocate for modern, agile software development practices
- Help develop and evangelize strong engineering and organizational practices
- Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
- Influence team culture, facilitate technical delivery, and collaborate with the team on strategic direction and execution
- Participate as an active member of the company leadership team, collaborating with other organizational leaders
- Travel globally up to 10% of the time for internal and external events
Requirements
- Proven track record of developing and growing engineering talent
- Knowledge of and passion for agile software development
- Experience leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers, with specific focus on Python developers
- Knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies
- Proficiency in Linux server administration, including storage and networking
- Hands-on experience with software automation
- Strong organizational skills, with ability to drive teams to deliver high-quality software on schedule
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development
Nice to have
- University degree in Computer Science or a related software engineering field
- Thorough understanding of modern infrastructure, including OpenStack or Kubernetes
- Professional experience in both operations and software development
- Familiarity with challenges associated with large-scale, multi-cloud operations
- Proficiency in the Go programming language
