Role overview

Canonical, a leading provider of open‑source software and the publisher of Ubuntu, is hiring a Web/UI Engineer to develop data‑rich, reliable user experiences for its enterprise products. The remote role focuses on building front‑ends with JavaScript, CSS, React and Flutter, contributing to the open‑source Vanilla Framework, and working with REST APIs while engaging with the broader open‑source community.

Responsibilities

  • Develop data‑rich and reliable user experiences for Canonical’s enterprise products using JavaScript, CSS, React, and Flutter.
  • Design, implement, and document well‑tested software in Web technologies or Flutter.
  • Build and extend the open‑source React toolkit and presentation layer, the Vanilla Framework.
  • Use REST APIs for communication and contribute to API design.
  • Debug and fix issues encountered by users.
  • Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate with community members and colleagues on technical specifications.
  • Contribute to technical documentation to make it the best of its kind.
  • Seek improvements to engineering and operations practices.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Advocate technically to contribute to product success.
  • Provide high‑quality front‑end and back‑end code while exhibiting technical leadership, exceptional design, and intuitive user experience.
  • Engage with the broader open‑source community and help build a thriving community.
  • Contribute to a broad range of technologies and ensure seamless software operations at scale.
  • Grow team’s exposure to Flutter for unifying desktop and web development.

Requirements

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
  • Demonstrated drive and a track record of going above and beyond expectations.
  • Well‑organized, self‑starting and able to deliver to schedule.
  • Professional manner in interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
  • Experience designing and writing high‑quality Web technologies.
