Telecom & Modem Engineer (Senior/Staff)
logcat.ai
Skill Required
Key highlights
- Top-of-market salary and founding equity
- 8+ years experience (or startup ownership)
- Comprehensive medical insurance
- Deep expertise in Cellular or Wi-Fi/CPE
Role overview
logcat.ai is the AI engineering layer for the operating-system stack, building agentic systems for Linux and Android devices. They ingest diagnostic artifacts (bugreports, logcat, dmesg, modem traces, ramdumps, perfetto, pcap, CAN) to help device makers diagnose, remediate, test, and author features across their OS stack, grounded in their own BSP, effectively combining Datadog and Cursor for the OS layer. As a VC-backed startup with a small, senior team, the company recently raised a $2.55M pre-seed. The role involves building systems for automatic cross-layer root cause analysis from the baseband through QMI and the radio HAL into Android, as well as from Wi-Fi drivers and firmware through the networking stack and management plane on OpenWrt-class access points and CPE.
Responsibilities
- Build parsers and analysis for modem traces: DIAG, QMI, QXDM/QCAT, modem ramdumps and crash logs.
- Build parsers and analysis for AP/CPE diagnostics: wlan driver and firmware logs, hostapd/wpa_supplicant logs, syslog, and packet captures.
- Map observed failures to root cause across NAS, RRC, and L1/L2, and across the RIL / radio HAL interface into Android.
- Implement Wi-Fi-stack reasoning: association/auth flows, roaming, mesh (EasyMesh), throughput and interference triage, driver/firmware crash analysis.
- Encode the cellular- and Wi-Fi-stack reasoning the platform uses to ground remediations.
Requirements
- 8 plus years of relevant engineering experience (Fewer than 8 is fine if you were at a startup where you owned the whole connectivity surface yourself).
- Deep expertise in one of the two tracks below:
- Cellular: modem/baseband bringup, debug, or protocol-stack work; fluency with DIAG/QMI, QXDM/QCAT, and reading modem crash dumps; working knowledge of 4G/5G NAS, RRC, and lower-layer behavior; IMS/VoLTE/VoNR debugging (SIP/IMS signaling and carrier field issues); comfort at the RIL / radio HAL boundary.
- Wi-Fi / CPE: OpenWrt-based access points or CPE; Wi-Fi 6/7 (802.11ax/be); hostapd/wpa_supplicant and mac80211/cfg80211; Qualcomm QSDK or MediaTek SDKs; debugging from wlan driver/firmware traces, hostapd logs, syslog, and packet captures.
- Proficient in day-to-day work with CLI-based AI coding tools like Claude Code (or an equivalent).
Nice to have
- Qualcomm modem internals.
- MediaTek modem familiarity (ELT / MTK logging).
- Carrier certification or lab/field debug experience.
- Any exposure to log-analysis or ML tooling.
- Network-side or RAN familiarity (gNB, RRC, NGAP, CU/DU/RU splits, open-RAN).
- EasyMesh, TR-069/TR-369 (USP), or TR-181 device management.
- RF debug and throughput/interference triage; FTTH/ONT familiarity.
- Operator acceptance testing.
Benefits
- Top-of-market salary and founding equity.
- Comprehensive medical insurance for you and your family.
- Start-up perks and flexible time off, the kind people actually take.
- The AI tools you need (AI across writing code, reviewing it, research, ops, and internal tooling).
- A front seat as we scale (Customer calls, the roadmap, the pipeline, how the company is actually doing).
- Early ownership, and full visibility.
- A small team that's easy to work with.
Additional details
- VC-backed startup with a small, senior team — you work directly with the founders.
- Recently raised a $2.55M pre-seed.
- The product is scaling and the customer list is growing.
- The team is still small, so you'll own what you build.
- Application requirement: tell us what you'd own here, and the hardest thing you've shipped in this domain.
- Hiring process: Screening call with Head of People & Business Operations, Technical conversation with Co-founder/CEO, Technical exercise with Co-founder/ Head of Engineering, Final conversation with Co-founder/CEO, References, then offer.
