Role overview
VirtusLab is a leading European software consulting and engineering company focused on crafting clean code and practical solutions through a culture of strong engineering, ownership, and transparency. This role involves developing and maintaining a key data processing platform, specifically taking ownership of the Data Quality area to identify, analyze, and eliminate data issues while building solutions to reduce their recurrence in a large data ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the Data Quality area and have a real impact on the quality of data delivered to clients
- Identify, analyse, and eliminate data quality issues
- Build solutions to reduce the recurrence of data quality issues
- Propose improvements and shape the overall approach to Data Quality
- Reduce the existing backlog of data quality issues
- Develop a proactive approach to detecting and preventing problems
- Find cohorts in BigQuery, work out why data is wrong, and fix it at scale (approximately 70% of the job)
- Build own remediation tooling and checks rather than just running queries
- Take vague tickets, scope them, deliver, and propose next steps
- Work directly with the US team
- Design mechanisms for improving data quality that avoid affecting production environment performance
- Use offline approaches for issue analysis and fixing to avoid impacting data processing time
- Deliver cost-effective data migrations
- Implement best practices in cutting-edge data architectures
Requirements
- Java - Expert level
- Kotlin - Advanced level
- Spring Boot - Advanced level
- Google Cloud Platform (GCP) - Advanced level
- BigQuery - Regular level
- Apache Beam - Basic level
- Apache Kafka - Basic level
- Kubernetes - Basic level
- Data Quality - Basic level
- Data analyst instincts combined with software engineer's hands
- Strong SQL skills (non-negotiable)
- Genuine curiosity about data (non-negotiable)
- JVM backend experience (Kotlin/Java, Spring Boot)
- Data quality/observability mindset (experience building monitors, data tests, or anomaly detection)
- Understanding of the difference between firefighting and building prevention
- High degree of ownership and autonomy
- Fluent English
- Comfortable working with legacy systems and ambiguity
- Ability to work in a live, latency-sensitive system where validation is statistical
