Role overview
HumanSignal is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a high‑performing team that builds and maintains an open‑source annotation platform, enterprise software, and managed data services. The role blends people management, delivery ownership, and hands‑on engineering to help the team ship reliable software, grow as professionals, and apply cutting‑edge coding‑agent tooling.
Responsibilities
- Manage the engineering team directly – 1:1s, feedback, performance reviews, promotions, and difficult conversations
- Own delivery: plan, scope, and ship quality software on a predictable rhythm while shaping the roadmap
- Remove friction and address recurring blockers, improving how the team uses AI tooling
- Hire, set clear expectations, give regular feedback, foster growth, and execute exits when necessary
- Provide technical judgment while staying close enough to code to challenge architectural decisions
- Lead the engineering response to escalations – identify the right people, make priority calls, and address recurring causes across customer, services‑team, and open‑source issues
- Write and ship code to stay hands‑on, support engineering decisions, and improve team practices
- Ensure that scope and delivery risks surface early, and that customer commitments and product priorities are reconciled before emergencies arise
Requirements
- At least a couple of years managing engineers
- Strong engineering background with proven technical judgment and architectural reasoning
- Experience hiring and developing people, addressing underperformance and making difficult people decisions
- Shipped software at a startup and can make decisions with incomplete information
- Uses coding agents seriously and can explain effective use with examples
- Able to say what you think early, give specific feedback, and avoid management by avoidance
- Can balance long‑term product work with customer deadlines, negotiate realistic commitments, and recognize when a services request should become a product capability
Nice to have
- Experience with ML tooling, data platforms, or evaluation systems
- Experience managing a distributed team
- Deep frontend architecture knowledge
