Key highlights
- Managed engineering team for at least 2 years
- Experienced with coding agents in production
- Stack: Python/Django, TypeScript/React, Postgres, Kubernetes
- Focus on building a reliable, ownership‑driven engineering culture
- No salary or explicit benefit details provided
Role overview
HumanSignal is looking for a senior engineering manager who will directly oversee a small engineering team, ensuring predictable delivery, fostering ownership, and maintaining technical excellence while actively contributing to code. The role involves planning, scoping, shipping software, managing people, and improving workflows—including the use of coding agents—in a fast‑moving, open‑source platform and managed data‑services business.
Responsibilities
- Manage the engineering team directly: 1:1s, feedback, performance, promotions, and difficult conversations
- Own delivery: plan, scope, and ship quality software against a roadmap, making trade‑offs explicit and pushing back on unrealistic capacity
- Shape how the team works: provide enough structure for predictability without bottlenecking, remove friction, address recurring blockers, and improve use of AI tooling
- Hire, set clear expectations, give growth feedback, and handle exits when necessary
- Maintain technical judgment by staying close to code and architecture, challenging decisions without becoming an approval gate
- Lead engineering response to escalations: involve right people, make priority calls, address recurring root causes across customer, services‑team, and open‑source issues
- Write and ship code to remain hands‑on in technical decision making and problem solving
- Use coding agents in real work, understand their strengths and limitations, verify output, and guide the team in effective use
- Help the team balance long‑term product work with customer deadlines, negotiate realistic commitments, and discern when a services request becomes a product feature
- Drive continuous improvement in ownership, risk visibility, customer commitment reconciliation, and recurring escalation resolution
Requirements
- Managed engineers for at least a couple of years, with experience hiring, developing people, addressing underperformance, and making difficult people decisions
- Strong engineering background with sound technical judgment and ability to reason about architecture and trade‑offs beyond one’s own code
- Continues to build software and enjoys it, with a track record of shipping at a startup and making decisions with incomplete information
- Proficiency in using coding agents and able to explain effective use with examples
- Early and candid communicator who gives specific feedback and does not manage by avoidance
- Able to balance long‑term product work with customer deadlines and negotiate realistic commitments
- Able to recognize when a services request should become a product capability and when it shouldn’t
Nice to have
- Experience with ML tooling, data platforms, or evaluation systems
- Experience managing a distributed team
- Frontend architecture depth
