Role overview
As an Engineering Manager for Target's Observability team, you will lead a specialized group of three Senior Engineers responsible for building and maintaining the technical 'nervous system' that ensures distributed services are reliable, performant, and cost-effective. Your role involves overseeing foundational tools and frameworks, driving strategic alignment, and shaping how engineering teams understand, troubleshoot, and optimize their services at scale. You will foster an environment of high performance, deep technical exploration, and continuous career growth while balancing high-fidelity system monitoring with financial efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Manage, mentor, and remove roadblocks for a specialized team of Senior Engineers, fostering an environment of high performance, deep technical exploration, and continuous career growth.
- Provide technical direction and oversight on the implementation and scaling of critical observability frameworks, leveraging tools like Open Telemetry and Prometheus to manage complex, high-cardinality data.
- Champion a culture of absolute reliability across the engineering organization by defining, standardizing, and promoting the active use of Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Indicators (SLIs).
- Lead the creation of repeatable, uniform development environments and approved tooling suites (governed containerizes, package managers, dependencies, etc.) optimized for both human engineers and automated agents to maximize output consistency and eliminate environment drift.
- Integrate automated vulnerability scanning directly into the core developer toolchain, intercepting security risks prior to package or tool installation while delivering immediate, actionable remediation steps for developers and automated systems alike.
- Strategically manage the high costs associated with massive telemetry data generation and storage, ensuring deep system insights are achieved without unchecked data sprawl.
- Build and refine financial callback and show back mechanisms (using platforms like Vantage) that empower Engineering Managers, Directors, and VPs to monitor, understand, and autonomously manage their own service costs.
- Partner closely with Principal Engineers, product management, and operations to define and execute the long-term technical roadmap for operational resilience and cloud cost observability.
- Implement processes that balance the demands of running a critical, high-availability platform with the team’s capacity, ensuring sustainable and efficient engineering practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or more advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- 5+ years of software or systems engineering experience, with a deep, proven background in Observability, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), FinOps, or Infrastructure.
- 1+ years of engineering management experience, with a strong aptitude for leading, mentoring, and retaining senior-level individual contributors.
- Deep technical understanding of the observability landscape, including hands-on experience with high-cardinality data systems, Open Telemetry, Prometheus, FOCUS or similar systems.
- Proven experience operationalizing performance targets like SLOs, cost budgets within large-scale, highly available distributed architectures.
- Strong grasp of cloud financial management principles, with the ability to design and implement financial callbacks, show backs, and cost-efficiency metrics for broader engineering leadership.
- Demonstrated excellent communication and organizational skills, with a strategic approach to driving the adoption of observability standards across distinct engineering teams.
