Role overview
Wrisk is transforming insurance for the digital age by combining technology, deep insurance capability, and rich data to help global brands build and operate embedded insurance propositions. As a Senior Data Engineer, you will take technical ownership of domain data capabilities within Wrisk’s Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering, working closely with the UK Data Engineering team to translate business objectives into scalable, production-grade systems and reusable tools for the shared data platform.
Responsibilities
- Own Domain Data Platforms: Take end-to-end technical responsibility for a business domain’s data platform—from early architecture design through to production delivery, monitoring, and ongoing operation
- Develop Pipelines & Services: Build reliable, idempotent ETL/ELT pipelines, backend APIs, and data services using Python, SQL, and modern software engineering practices
- Provision Cloud Infrastructure: Design, deploy, and manage secure, scalable AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
- Build Shared Capabilities: Leverage Wrisk’s core data platform and orchestration frameworks, while actively contributing reusable tooling back to the shared ecosystem for other engineers to use
- Ensure Operational Excellence: Optimize data models, query performance, and system architecture while embedding observability, resilience, and automated testing into your services
- Simplify & Automate: Continuously look for opportunities to reduce technical debt, automate repetitive engineering tasks, and improve overall developer experience
- Collaborate Across Borders: Work closely with our UK Data Engineering team to translate high-level business goals into pragmatic technical solutions with minimal supervision
Requirements
- 5+ years of software/data engineering experience, with a proven track record of shipping and operating production systems
- Deep expertise in writing clean, modular Python
- Advanced SQL skills (database design, data modeling, indexing, and query optimization)
- Hands-on experience building cloud-native solutions on AWS
- Managing infrastructure declaratively via Terraform
- Skilled in creating resilient ELT/ETL orchestration workflows
- Containerizing applications with Docker
- Designing robust APIs/backend microservices
- Comfortable operating from high-level, ambiguous objectives rather than detailed specifications, making pragmatic technical trade-offs along the way
- Proactive, self-directed, and motivated by full lifecycle accountability—you don't wait for work to be assigned; you find and fix problems
Benefits
- High Autonomy & Impact: True end-to-end technical ownership, shaping system architecture, driving engineering standards, and delivering capabilities used across the organization
- Truly Flexible Remote Culture: 100% remote flexibility based in India, structured around smooth overlap with UK business hours
- Competitive Compensation & Growth: Market-competitive salary package alongside ongoing opportunities for career advancement
- Modern Developer Setup: Top-tier gear provided from day one (high-spec laptop, software licenses, and peripherals)
- Health & Well-being: Comprehensive employee medical coverage and wellness support
- Time Off to Recharge: Generous paid annual leave allowance plus standard public holidays
- Inclusive & Transparent Team: A flat, open culture where diverse perspectives are valued, bureaucracy is minimal, and your voice influences key technical decisions
Additional details
- In Month 1: You have onboarded into the Wrisk stack, understood our shared orchestration and infrastructure patterns, built strong working relationships with the UK Data Engineering team, and made your first production contributions
- In Month 3: You have taken full technical ownership of your assigned domain data platform, delivered production-ready pipelines, and contributed at least one reusable improvement back to Wrisk's shared tooling
- In Month 6 & Beyond: You are operating with high autonomy—setting architectural standards within your domain, anticipating performance bottlenecks before they hit production, and serving as a trusted technical authority who elevates Wrisk’s overall data engineering maturity
