Role overview
This is an Associate Project Engineer role based at Hitachi Energy’s India Operations Centre (INOPC) in Chennai, India, for experienced engineers with technical expertise in GIS substation primary engineering. The role is part of the GIS Primary Offer Engineering team, with core focus on supporting sales and tendering activities for Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) above 66kV, including preparing engineering documents, drawings, technical calculations and cost estimates for offer submissions and project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Work as a member of the GIS Primary Offer Engineering team.
- Support Sales & Tendering engineers to develop tender-specific engineering documents and drawings to calculate accurate costs and submit required documentation to customers as part of offer packages.
- Complete primary engineering work for Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS) used in transmission and sub-transmission systems.
- Deliver assigned tasks as an individual contributor, coordinate with colleagues as required, and demonstrate strong collaborative skills to complete work.
- Interact with cross-functional teams including Secondary engineering, Steel structure engineering, Project Management and Production units as needed.
- Prepare customer-submission drawings and documents for Gas Insulated Switchgear above 66kV, with major deliverables including Gas SLD, GIS layout, cable tray layout, earthing layout, cabling overview and assembly overview.
- Perform system resistance, thermal loss, gas volume, earthing mat and cable calculations.
- Calculate bill of materials (BOM) for projects and tenders.
- Prepare cost estimations based on the generated BOM.
- Conduct self-review of own documents and review of peers’ documents.
- Coordinate with team members, Sales Support engineers and Area Sales Managers.
- Apply Design to Value (DtV) principles to develop optimized solutions aligned with customer requirements.
- Maintain and update project and tender documentation in compliance with established quality processes.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) or Mechanical Engineering.
- Have 3-8 years of experience in tender or execution of substation projects or high voltage product design.
- Possess strong proficiency in CAD tools including Creo and AutoCAD.
- Have familiarity with applicable codes and standards such as IEC, IEEE, ANSI and other relevant industry standards.
- Have excellent knowledge of high voltage products and substations.
- Demonstrate strong teamwork skills, ability to meet sales targets and deliver solutions on time.
- Have excellent communication skills in English.

- Proficiency in German, French or Spanish language (designated as an added advantage).
