Role overview
We are looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer with strong experience in Java, Spring, MongoDB and IBM WebSphere Commerce (WCS) to support a major platform modernisation initiative. The role involves migrating functionality and data away from WCS toward a modern Java/Spring and MongoDB backend while providing technical guidance on WCS infrastructure and deployment processes.
Responsibilities
- Work as part of a team migrating functionality and data away from WCS as the source of truth.
- Develop and maintain backend services using Java and Spring/Spring Boot.
- Work with MongoDB as part of the target backend architecture.
- Analyse and navigate the existing WCS codebase to understand business logic, integrations and dependencies.
- Provide technical guidance on WCS infrastructure and architecture.
- Understand and support existing WCS build, deployment and release processes.
- Troubleshoot WCS environments and resolve infrastructure/application issues.
- Support access, configuration and environment management across WCS.
- Help identify and migrate relevant functionality from WCS into the new Java/Spring/MongoDB stack.
- Collaborate with engineering, architecture and DevOps teams throughout the migration.
- Contribute to improving build, deployment and operational processes.
- Support the team in reducing dependency on WCS and transitioning towards the new platform.
Requirements
- Strong experience as a Senior Java Backend Engineer.
- Hands‑on experience with Java and Spring/Spring Boot.
- Strong experience with MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases.
- Strong hands‑on experience with IBM WebSphere Commerce (WCS) is essential.
- Good understanding of WCS infrastructure and environments.
- Experience navigating and troubleshooting large WCS codebases.
- Strong understanding of WCS build and deployment processes.
- Experience managing or troubleshooting WCS access and environment configuration.
- Experience working on complex enterprise e‑commerce platforms.
- Ability to understand existing legacy systems and support migration to modern architectures.
Nice to have
- Experience with Microsoft Azure.
- Experience with DevOps / CI/CD.
- Experience with Azure DevOps, pipelines and deployment automation.
- Experience with containerisation and Kubernetes.
- Experience in e‑commerce / retail environments.
- Experience migrating from legacy commerce platforms to modern microservices architectures.
