Role overview

Canonical is hiring a Python Software Engineer to join its Certification team, which builds tools to verify that desktops, laptops, servers and IoT devices function properly with Ubuntu. The team operates at the intersection of hardware and software, so the ideal candidate is a Python developer familiar with hardware, and the team develops open source certification tools for Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server, including in-house testing hardware and software test frameworks. This role offers the opportunity to drive broader Linux adoption across diverse device categories and industries, with the team centered in EMEA time zones and collaborating with colleagues across the Americas and APAC, as well as silicon companies, OEMs and ODMs to deliver smooth, secure out-of-the-box Ubuntu experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop new features for Canonical’s Python-based test automation tools (such as Checkbox) used by in-house teams and industry partners
  • Invent new methods to enable remote, automated testing
  • Build software counterparts to in-house designed testing hardware to support device enablement testing (including graphics, hotplug, bluetooth and other functionality)
  • Write functional and performance tests to support hardware enablement and prevent regressions
  • Participate in 2-3 international team meetings per year that require travel
  • Develop and maintain Canonical’s open source certification tools
  • Support the creation of hardware solutions for test automation
  • Automate existing team processes
  • Pursue continuous process and tooling improvements to expand certification test suites, with the goal of improving the quality of Linux experience for millions of end users

Requirements

  • Self-motivated professional with experience developing in Python
  • Experience working on test automation tools or Linux-based embedded hardware
  • Knowledge of the Python programming language
  • Quality-oriented, pragmatic approach to software design and implementation
  • Interest in test automation methodologies
  • Previous experience working with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions
  • Ability to be productive in a globally distributed team

Nice to have

  • Passion for tinkering / maker mindset
  • Experience working in an agile environment
  • Hardware testing experience, for example in the IoT space
  • Familiarity with the C programming language
