Key highlights

  • Required Experience: 9+ years
  • Role Level: Staff (Individual Contributor)
  • Key Requirement: Experience with commerce surfaces at scale
  • Key Requirement: Proficiency in Vue.js and Go
  • Work Style: Global, remote-first organization

Role overview

You will be the technical owner of every pixel a Commerce merchant or shopper sees, serving as the staff-level individual contributor responsible for raising the frontend bar for all of HighLevel. You will set the architecture, write standards, review code, and hire the team for the greenfield Commerce project, later transitioning those successful patterns into shared capabilities for the entire organization. Working closely with the central frontend platform team, you will lead through design documents, code, and reviews while continuing to write production code weekly. You are responsible for solving critical challenges regarding performance, accessibility, architecture coupling, and the scalability of frontend patterns across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Publish the Commerce frontend standard: architecture, state, data fetching, testing, accessibility, and performance for adoption by every Commerce team.
  • Instrument real-user monitoring on every Commerce surface and publish field metrics for LCP, INP, and CLS per surface, with an owning team for each.
  • Review frontend pull requests across Commerce to raise quality and document patterns for scale.
  • Map the central frontend platform roadmap against Commerce needs and agree on a working contract regarding provisions, builds, and contribution flows.
  • Set up a standing design review with the central platform team to align Commerce and platform decisions.
  • Produce a frontend hiring plan detailing the number of engineers, levels, and order of hiring.
  • Ship the architecture that allows every Commerce team to build and deploy surfaces independently with enforced module boundaries, building on the central platform's foundation.
  • Put performance and bundle budgets in CI for every Commerce route, where regressions fail the build.
  • Make accessibility a gate via automated checks in CI and manual audits on checkout and storefront flows against WCAG 2.2 AA.
  • Land typed, generated API clients end to end so backend contract changes break at compile time.
  • Contribute at least one Commerce-built capability to the central platform for adoption by another organization.
  • Hire and onboard the first Commerce frontend engineers.
  • Ensure Commerce storefronts meet 'good' Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile in field data on mid-range mobile devices.
  • Ensure checkout and storefront pass a WCAG 2.2 AA audit.
  • Enable backend engineers to ship frontend features that meet the standard without direct involvement.
  • Design shared instructions, skills, and review gates so coding agents across Commerce follow the frontend standard by default.
  • Establish Commerce as HighLevel's reference implementation for frontend excellence, extending standards and agent guidance to other organizations.
  • Lead or co-lead HighLevel-wide frontend decisions with the central platform team via RFCs.

Requirements

  • 9+ years of experience in building frontend systems.
  • Experience building commerce surfaces at scale (storefronts, checkout, or point of sale).
  • Experience building or leading a design system consumed by many teams and safely shipping breaking changes through it.
  • Experience using ConnectRPC, gRPC-Web, or protocol buffers from the browser.
  • Ability to read and write Go well enough to build or review a backend-for-frontend.
  • Experience contributing to open source, web standards discussions, or the frontend community.
  • Experience teaching backend engineers to ship good frontend code.
  • Experience contributing to a shared frontend platform or design system used by several product organizations.
  • Experience owning frontend architecture across several teams for a multi-quarter effort with demonstrable before-and-after results.
  • Experience working with a central platform team as both a consumer and contributor, influencing roadmaps and landing changes in shared code.
  • Deep knowledge of the browser platform (rendering pipeline, event loop, long tasks, Baseline, and MDN).
  • Ability to diagnose performance with field data, performance traces, and network waterfalls, and move Core Web Vitals in production using budgets.
  • Experience designing systems where many teams deploy independently into one product (knowledge of module federation, native ES modules, import maps, monorepos).
  • Ability to design client-server communication including backend-for-frontend layers, typed RPC contracts, caching, and invalidation.
  • Knowledge of building with semantic HTML, ARIA, WCAG 2.2, colour contrast requirements, and keyboard/screen reader behaviour, including leading accessibility audits.
  • Knowledge of security practices including treating user-generated content as hostile, XSS, content security policy, sandboxed rendering, and npm supply chain risk.
  • Ability to conduct code reviews that improve engineers, identify race conditions, and turn feedback into lint rules and documentation.
  • Daily disciplined use of coding agents, including writing context, specs, and skills to match standards and verifying generated code with tests.
  • Ability to write design documents and decision records that are actionable without meetings.
