Role overview

This role is the Security Engineering Manager for Canonical's AppArmor team, which develops mandatory access control security features that protect all users of Ubuntu, the world's most widely used Linux distribution that underpins the security of the entire internet. The position directly impacts the safety and security of millions of global users, with leadership contributions helping to protect the open-source ecosystem, address emerging threats, and ensure Ubuntu's long-term integrity. The manager will lead a team of engineers ranging from graduate to senior level, providing line management, career guidance, and mentorship, while also representing the team and AppArmor product to stakeholders, partners, customers, and the broader security engineering leadership team, and coordinating cross-team efforts to deliver on agreed security and engineering goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers ranging from graduate to senior level
  • Coach, mentor, and offer career development feedback to team members
  • Identify and measure team health indicators
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes for the team
  • Represent the team and AppArmor product to stakeholders, partners, and customers
  • Develop and evangelise strong engineering and organisational practices
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed team goals and projects
  • Serve as an active member of the security engineering leadership team, collaborating with other security leaders
  • Develop security features and capabilities for AppArmor, Ubuntu's mandatory access control security module that confines programs and restricts their access to system resources to protect all Ubuntu users
  • Engage directly with the open source community and customers
  • Coordinate efforts across multiple engineering teams and projects to deliver AppArmor security improvements

Requirements

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative educational path
  • Demonstrated drive and track record of going above and beyond expectations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Proven love of developing and growing people, with a track record of doing so
  • Strong organisational skills to ensure the team delivers timely, high quality results
  • Professional manner when interacting with colleagues, partners, and the open source community
  • Proficiency in C programming language and good understanding of Linux kernel development
  • Experience working with Linux Security Modules
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about software and application security
  • Solid experience working in an agile development environment
  • Demonstrated drive for continual learning
  • Ability to build trust, relationships and confidence with others
  • Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events, up to two weeks each time
