Role overview

Canonical is seeking Community Engineers to join its team as it works to set a standard of excellence in serving the open source ecosystem. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically proficient person passionate about open source software, Linux, and sustainable community building. The role focuses on supporting and scaling engagement with the global Ubuntu open source community, working cross-functionally with Canonical's engineering, product, marketing, and developer relations teams to design, execute, and launch community initiatives, facilitate volunteer contributor work, represent community interests internally, and promote community accomplishments via content and conference engagements. Multiple positions are open at varying seniority levels, all fully remote and available to candidates worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • As part of the Canonical Community team, enable community leaders and participants to get things done by coordinating with Canonical teams and ensuring community processes are efficient and well run, while facilitating (rather than performing) community work to help energetic, ambitious community members leverage Canonical's work to bring their own vision of Ubuntu to life to meet their community's unique needs and interests
  • Design, execute, and scale initiatives that foster a thriving open source community
  • Work hand in hand with developers to smooth processes and integrate community plans with Canonical plans for maximum impact
  • Encourage and facilitate the creation of new technical projects that enhance the community contribution experience
  • Represent community interests to Canonical teams
  • Lead complex, multi-disciplinary programs from conception through launch, working closely with Developer Relations engineers, technical authors, product managers, marketing teams, engineering teams, and external partners
  • Support and engage with volunteer developers in the Ubuntu community, addressing their concerns and helping them create successful tools
  • Help ensure the success, overall autonomy, and sustainability of community projects
  • Provide content and technical support to keep the community engaged and informed, including regular blog and social media posts about community initiatives, events, accomplishments, and collaborative efforts between Canonical and the Ubuntu community
  • Communicate effectively with developers and software engineers, representing both the Ubuntu community and Canonical as a contributor to the wider Linux ecosystem
  • Attend conferences and expos to speak about technical community projects and their development processes
  • Write high-quality content to promote and support community initiatives
  • Collaborate on finding effective solutions to community problems
  • Work from home with 2 to 4 weeks of annual global travel for internal and external events, with potential for additional travel if desired
  • Nurture community contributions to Ubuntu
  • Engage with the Ubuntu community through Discourse, Matrix, social media, conferences, and other relevant channels
  • Represent Ubuntu via speaking engagements at events and conferences
  • Support Canonical teams' engagement into the open source ecosystem

Requirements

  • Love technology and working with brilliant people
  • Are curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable
  • Value soft skills and are passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated
  • Have experience with developer tools and open source projects
  • Have a clear public record of accomplishments (talks, blog posts, GitHub, X, etc.)
  • Have interest and experience with at least one of the following: Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), DevOps, software development, testing and QA, package management, container technology
  • Can work autonomously and assume full ownership of objectives as needed
  • Can be flexible with their time and enjoy working with new technology in a fast-paced environment
  • Have experience working with open source communities and understand the workflow of volunteer contributors
  • Have experience in technical program management and possess excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
