- Role requires aggressive use of AI-assisted development to accelerate build and experimentation
Role overview
Endless Studios is a global youth game-making studio and learning community focused on helping learners transition from players to creators by building real games, portfolios, and future-ready skills, collaborating with industry mentors and peers worldwide, and partnering with schools, universities, game studios, and strategic partners to make game creation accessible to all. The company is hiring a Founding Software Engineer to lead development of a new browser-based real-time 3D creative tool, which will be built from an existing prototype and integrated with Endless’ live Windows-native product, with the goal of supporting the widest possible range of devices from school Chromebooks to gaming PCs.
Responsibilities
- Take the project from an initial prototype to a hardened foundation from which the full product can be built
- Serve as the first and initially only engineer on the project, working directly with the Head of Product and collaborating with the broader Windows-native product engineering team
- Define the product MVP and rapidly prototype potential approaches
- Evaluate technologies such as Three.js, WebGPU, WebGL, PlayCanvas, and other web-game technologies
- Evaluate the existing browser-native prototype and determine what functionality to keep and what to leave behind
- Design the product architecture and build the foundation for the initial product release
- Evaluate how the browser-native product should interact with the live Windows-native product
- Explore considerations including multiplayer, content compatibility, and appropriate boundaries between the browser-native and Windows-native products
- Establish an architecture suitable for an open-source community
- Use AI-assisted development aggressively to accelerate development and experimentation
- Provide strong technical and architectural leadership while remaining a hands-on individual contributor
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated ability
- Strong experience with web-based game development and real-time 3D, including Three.js, WebGPU, WebGL, PlayCanvas, or comparable technologies
- Professional Unity/game development experience
- Strong understanding of multiple game-development disciplines, including gameplay, rendering, networking, tools, engines, or technical art
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly prototype and evaluate competing technologies
- Experience with AI-assisted development
- Strong product instincts and the ability to think like a product owner and technical leader, not just an implementer
- Excellent architectural judgment and communication skills
- Comfortable operating independently in an ambiguous, rapidly changing startup environment
- Strong performance and optimization instincts across a wide range of hardware
Nice to have
- Experience with game engines/editors, open-source projects, multiplayer, content pipelines, or shipping products across desktop and mobile
Additional details
- The new product is real-time 3D, runs in a browser tab, and is built to reach the widest possible range of devices, from a school Chromebook and a mid-range Android phone through to a tablet and a gaming PC
- The product is based on both a live Windows-native product and an existing browser-native prototype
- Engagement is remote/anywhere, contractor-based, with an initial 3-month term
- The initial 3-month engagement will focus on defining the MVP, evaluating the prototype, technology and architecture, and building the first working version of the product
- For the right candidate, there is an opportunity to continue with the product and grow into a larger technical leadership role
- To apply, candidates must provide their resume/LinkedIn profile and examples of software, games, tools, prototypes, or other products they have built; GitHub or other public work is highly valued
- The ideal candidate would rather build three prototypes than debate one architecture for three weeks, enjoys figuring out problems that do not have obvious answers, learning new technologies quickly, and moving from an idea to a working product with minimal overhead, and wants real ownership including helping define the product, making architectural decisions, and writing code
