The Senior Software Engineer role is a high‑autonomy position where you will own meaningful product and platform outcomes from end‑to‑end, work closely with product, design, and engineering peers, and help shape the organization’s AI‑assisted development practices.
Responsibilities
- Own high‑stakes work as the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI), taking hard or ill‑defined problems (e.g., product one‑pager, member pain point, partner integration) and designing, building, shipping, monitoring, fixing, and iterating on them.
- Design for flexibility by breaking down work and sequencing changes to deliver incremental value that unlocks business and user benefits.
- Make technical calls, including speed‑vs‑durability tradeoffs, and drive decisions on contested issues rather than waiting for consensus.
- Operate what you build: ensure reliability, observability, and incident response for your domain.
- Use AI as leverage: apply AI tools (e.g., Codex, Claude Code) effectively, know when to trust the model, push back when unsure, and raise the bar for organization‑wide AI usage.
- Mentor directly through pairing, code reviews, and helping less‑experienced engineers become DRIs, while raising the overall technical bar for the team.
- Drive measurable outcomes by tying initiatives to member metrics, cost lines, reliability targets, or revenue levers and articulating success criteria up front.
- Work in small, focused pods with clear DRIs; act as DRI when appropriate and hold product and other stakeholders accountable for outcomes.
- Set the tempo for the team: nudge stalled reviews, force decisions when needed, and identify and address slowdowns.
- Protect focus by fixing sources of interruption (flaky alerts, recurring questions, manual steps, noisy Slack pings) at the root.
- Build leverage with AI tools week over week, treating agentic workflows as the default rather than an experiment.
- Ensure "Done" is measured by production behavior, member impact, and business results, making local decisions and being accountable for the results.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of leading initiatives end‑to‑end and serving as a DRI.
- Demonstrated ability to lead in ambiguity, turning vague problem statements into working solutions.
- Fluent with AI‑assisted development tools such as Codex, Claude Code, or equivalents; refined patterns and workflows, with concrete examples of tool successes and failures.
- Strong fundamentals in Carrot’s stack or adjacent technologies: C#/.NET, TypeScript, React, SQL, distributed systems, and cloud infrastructure (Azure and/or AWS); experienced operating production systems.
- Ability to influence without formal authority, driving alignment across product, design, and other teams.
- Proven mentorship skills: give and receive direct, specific feedback and help other engineers improve without being asked.
- High agency: thrive in imperfect conditions, missing context, ambiguous ownership, and half‑built tooling.
- Bias for delivery: prioritize shipping good‑enough solutions and iterating over perfect polish.
- Comfort making quick decisions in low‑information environments, pulling in others only when their input genuinely changes the answer.
- Maintain a high personal bar, name problems early, and give/receive direct feedback.
