Role overview
CodeDay is a non-profit providing welcoming, hands-on opportunities for under-served students to explore a future in tech and beyond. Its Labs program is a 100% online tech internship that pairs CS students from affordable local colleges with industry mentors to work on real-world, open-source Computer Science projects. Mentor managers help recruit, onboard, train, and provide support to the mentors who oversee student projects, supporting a team of 3-20 mentors.
Responsibilities
- Recruit mentors (optional): Reach out to engineering leadership at a few tech companies, and present information about why their employees should volunteer.
- Onboard mentors: One ~15min phone call to determine interests and match them with one of our partner open source projects.
- Monitor: During the program, ensure all teams are meeting regularly, and review weekly reflections from mentors and students. Raise any concerns with program staff.
- Check in: During the program, check in with your mentors every 1-2 weeks about any issues or feedback.
Requirements
- Good organizational skills (or otherwise happy to edit things in a spreadsheet).
- Comfortable taking on the phone and writing emails.
- At least hand-wavey-level knowledge of how teams develop software, and some modern tooling (consuming/building APIs, what goes into front-end/mobile/back-end development, etc). You don't need to know how to do these things, but you need to be able to talk about them enough to help match a mentor to a project.
- Available during some US working hours each weekday.
Nice to have
- College students or responsible high school students are probably a good fit.
Benefits
- Paid as a contractor: $50 per mentor managed.
- Paid as a contractor: $50 per mentor recruited, if any, as a result of your efforts.
- Paid as a contractor: $50 per session for your time attending meetings with our program staff.
Additional details
- Most of these activities will take place at your own schedule.
- You're also welcome to do this as a volunteer job, if you'd like to help us get more students into the program.
