Role overview
Okta is seeking a Senior Android Engineer to join the Universal Components team, focusing on building and maintaining open‑source UI components, SDKs, and libraries that enable developers to integrate identity solutions. The role emphasizes a developer‑first mindset, cross‑functional collaboration, and advocacy within the open‑source community to create seamless, secure authentication experiences for millions of users worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with developer relations, onboarding, growth, dashboard, and core SDK teams to provide a world‑class experience for component libraries.
- Architect and develop composable, production‑ready UI components from the ground up using Jetpack Compose and traditional XML views where necessary.
- Shape, develop, and maintain open‑source Universal Components Android SDKs and client libraries.
- Write, curate, and polish technical content such as tutorials, guides, sample applications, and comprehensive API documentation.
- Engage directly with the open‑source developer community, providing domain knowledge and technical assistance to champion Auth0.
- Serve as the go‑to technical expert internally and externally, conduct thorough code reviews, and uphold high quality and UI testing standards across mobile libraries.
- Represent Okta by sharing technical expertise at conferences, tech events, community forums, or through technical publications.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and fix complex issues across client libraries while staying current with modern Android architecture and platform standards.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional expertise in native Android development using Kotlin & Java.
- 3+ years of hands‑on expertise building production interfaces with Jetpack Compose.
- Proven ability to translate design mocks (e.g., Figma) into clean, modular, and accessible Compose code.
- Strong track record of developing reusable Android UI libraries, SDKs, or widely used application architectures.
- Deep understanding of Android frameworks, core architecture components, and the broader Android ecosystem.
- Experience deploying applications to the Google Play Store or publishing packages/libraries to artifact repositories such as Maven Central.
- Deep understanding of CI/CD platforms (e.g., GitHub Actions, CircleCI) and running automated UI and unit tests in continuous integration environments.
- Deep knowledge of writing, running, maintaining, and debugging complex mobile applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrable experience authoring developer documentation (tutorials, blog posts, or guides).
- Ability to be self‑directed, take ownership, and work independently while thriving in a globally distributed team environment.
- Strong empathy for developers and a developer‑first mindset.

- Knowledge or hands‑on experience with Design Systems (building component libraries, design tokens, or multi‑platform visual consistency).
- Experience with iOS development (Swift & Objective‑C) or cross‑platform architectures.
