Role overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Data Engineer to join our healthcare technology team, focusing on healthcare interoperability. This role involves designing, building, and maintaining Azure-based data infrastructure (databases, pipelines, analytics platforms, BI solutions) with an emphasis on integrating Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and healthcare data standards (FHIR, C-CDA, HL7). The position requires deep Microsoft data stack expertise, architectural leadership, and healthcare data compliance knowledge. This senior role also involves mentoring engineers and reports to the Director of Data Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable, secure Azure data architectures for BI, analytics, and operations
- Build/maintain data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and related services
- Contribute to database designs across Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, CosmosDB, and SQL Managed Instance
- Optimize storage strategies for Azure Blob Storage, Data Lake, and structured databases
- Design data models and structures for efficient analytics/reporting
- Develop/maintain complex database objects (stored procedures, functions, triggers, views)
- Implement database DevOps (schema versioning, deployment automation, rollbacks)
- Perform database tuning, indexing, and query optimization
- Ensure HIPAA/HITRUST compliance and data security for PHI
- Manage database lifecycle using RedGate Flyway
- Design ETL/ELT processes for multi-source data integration
- Build event-driven solutions using Azure Service Bus/Event Grid
- Integrate external REST APIs and develop internal APIs (Python/FastAPI/Flask on Azure Container Apps/Functions)
- Develop data transformation logic and orchestration workflows
- Ensure data quality, consistency, and lineage
- Integrate Azure AI/ML services as needed
- Review Power BI solutions (semantic models, reports, dashboards)
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Optimize data structures for reporting performance
- Mentor junior developers and engineers
- Establish data engineering best practices
- Participate in architecture reviews and technical decisions
- Collaborate with DevOps/Infrastructure teams on platform improvements
- Drive data quality/performance/reliability improvements
- Create technical documentation (data dictionaries, architecture diagrams)
- Document data lineage, transformations, and business rules
- Maintain compliance audit trails
- Troubleshoot complex data platform issues
- Provide production incident escalation support
- Support cross-functional business operations
- Participate in on-call rotation
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in CS/IS/Data Engineering or equivalent experience
- 8+ years in data engineering/database development
- Expert T-SQL and Microsoft SQL Server skills
- Expert Python proficiency
- REST API and Python background worker (FastAPI/Flask) experience
- Event-driven architecture and async processing knowledge
- Azure data services experience (SQL, Data Factory, Synapse, Blob Storage)
- Data pipeline/ETL/ELT implementation experience
- Power BI skills (DAX, data modeling, performance optimization)
- Database design principles (normalization, data modeling)
- Git and CI/CD experience
- Strong analytical/problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication (written/verbal)
- Team collaboration and independent work ability
- Microsoft certification (Azure Data Engineer/DB Admin/Power BI)
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Bicep/ARM) knowledge
- Additional Azure services (Container Apps, Functions, Logic Apps)
- Other databases (PostgreSQL, CosmosDB) experience
- HIPAA/HITRUST compliance understanding
- PowerShell automation/scripting
