Role overview

The Engineering Manager will lead and grow the software engineering team responsible for a critical virtual appliance that customers deploy within their private environments, providing a secure, reliable connection between customer-managed systems and SailPoint Identity Security. Built on AI and machine learning, the role focuses on engineering execution, collaboration with Product Management, and delivering meaningful customer outcomes with greater speed and predictability.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the software engineering team responsible for a critical virtual appliance
- Own engineering execution and collaborate with Product Management on the roadmap
- Deliver meaningful customer outcomes with greater speed and predictability
- Coach engineers, review architectural proposals, and refine sprint priorities
- Coordinate releases or incident follow-up with peer teams
- Communicate roadmap progress and risks to stakeholders
- Read code, understand owned systems, and provide technical guidance on Linux, virtualization, containerization, and customer-deployed software
- Continue developing the team's Scrum practices around a predictable two-week sprint cadence
- Preserve flexibility to respond to urgent customer and operational needs
- Champion responsible use of modern AI and LLM capabilities to improve engineering effectiveness, quality, decision-making, and business outcomes
- On-call rotation participation for customer-impacting issues
- Work closely with Product Management and experts across security, vulnerability management, architecture, release engineering, support, and other engineering organizations
- Define and execute hiring and team-development plan aligned with roadmap
- Take full ownership of engineering execution, team development, delivery reporting, dependency management, and risk communication
- Establish consistent two-week Scrum cadence with clear backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives, and visible progress against commitments
- Agree with Product Management on prioritized stabilization plan, roadmap sequencing, and baseline measures for delivery predictability and platform reliability
- Introduce practical, responsible AI-assisted workflows that produce demonstrable improvements in engineering quality, decision-making, or delivery efficiency
- Operate a mature, predictable Scrum model that consistently balances roadmap delivery with customer and operational priorities
- Establish and begin executing a multi-quarter technical strategy for the platform's continued modernization and architectural evolution
- Develop a working understanding of platform architecture, codebase, roadmap, release lifecycle, customer experience, operational history, and major technical risks
- Assess team's current delivery practices, staffing needs, and near-term priorities
- Share a focused 90-day action plan with stakeholders
- Strengthen production ownership through effective incident response, learning reviews, vulnerability remediation, and follow-through on reliability improvements
- Make measurable progress against agreed hiring plan and ensure every engineer has clear expectations, feedback, and development goals
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years managing and developing software engineers
- Proven experience leading teams that build customer-installed applications, virtual appliances, connectors, gateways, or comparable software deployed in customer-managed environments
- Experience building software that securely connects customer environments with cloud-based SaaS services
- Strong technical understanding of Linux, virtualization, and containerization, with ability to read and understand code and contribute meaningfully to architecture and design discussions
- Experience managing the lifecycle of customer-deployed software, including distribution, upgrades, patching, compatibility, diagnostics, vulnerability remediation, and incident response
- Demonstrated success implementing and refining Agile/Scrum practices to create predictable delivery while responding effectively to urgent needs
- Experience hiring, mentoring, managing performance, and supporting career development of engineers
- Excellent planning, reporting, communication, and cross-functional coordination skills
- Experience leading distributed teams and collaborating effectively across time zones
- Hands-on fluency with modern AI and LLM tools, including experience using reusable skills and agents to achieve engineering and business outcomes and sound judgment about when an agent, skill, or conversational assistant is the right approach
- A strong product, customer, security, and reliability mindset
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience
