Role overview
MTR Legal Rechtsanwälte, a mid-sized and internationally oriented law firm, is seeking a Senior/Lead Backend Developer to own the architecture and development of a Legal OS MVP. The system is a backend-only pipeline where a document is ingested, classified by type and Matter-ID, filed, processed for deadlines and tasks, used to draft emails as PDFs, and fully audited — with no portal/UI. The focus is on reliability, security, idempotency, and observability. This is a project-based role starting as soon as possible, fully remote (CET/Europe ideally), with utilization after agreement. The candidate will work closely with the firm's lawyers, combining high-performance backend engineering with the domain demands of legal practice.
Responsibilities
- Own the backend architecture and ship it to production
- Design and implement failure-mode handling: retries, idempotency, consistency, race conditions
- Build queue/eventing infrastructure with clean observability and logging
- Develop comprehensive testing: integration, end-to-end, and regression
- Define architectural boundaries with minimal service contracts (API/events) for the MVP
- Design the Matter-ID/data model including mapping rules and idempotency keys
- Implement a workflow layer with retries/backoff, dead-letter queues, replay, and deduplication
- Set up security with SSO, roles/permissions, and a secrets concept
- Build an audit trail that is comprehensible — tracking who/what/when/why via correlation IDs and tracing
- Establish QA gates with E2E/regression testing for sending, deadlines, and audits (CI-ready)
Requirements
- Senior/Lead level backend development experience with production-shipped systems
- Deep understanding of failure modes in distributed systems (retries, idempotency, consistency, race conditions)
- Hands-on experience with queues and eventing patterns
- Serious approach to testing: integration, E2E, and regression
- Proficiency with backend technologies such as Python/FastAPI
- Experience with Postgres
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker)
- Knowledge of OIDC/SSO
- Experience with external API integrations (e.g., Box, HubSpot, Graph, Asana)
Nice to have
- Experience with observability tooling such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, or ELK
- Experience with event streaming platforms like NATS, RabbitMQ, or Kafka
- Background in legal tech, compliance, or regulated-industry software
Benefits
- 100% remote work (CET/Europe ideal)
- Project-based engagement with start ASAP
- Utilization/schedule after agreement
