Canonical, a leading open source software and Ubuntu provider, is hiring a Go (Golang) Software Engineer focused on Developer Tooling and Containers to build a new open-source developer experience tool. The role centers on reimagining traditional developer workflows to retain the benefits of Linux while supporting work in immutable distro environments and with remote cloud resources, with the tool deeply integrated with Ubuntu desktop, modern IDEs, and SDKs from major silicon providers like NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD, targeting use cases across Robotics, MLOps, and IoT to make Ubuntu the leading platform for software engineers. The role is fully remote, open to candidates in any APAC time zone, and requires in-person travel twice a year for up to two weeks for company events. The team prioritizes intellectual honesty, peer reviews, and clear, maintainable code, and the role involves end-to-end work on tool capabilities from user experience design to implementation with a focus on correctness, performance, quality, and security, as well as collaboration with internal and external teams.

Requirements

  • Professional software development experience using Go, Python, C, or C++
  • Knowledge of Linux system-level fundamentals, for example, cgroups and namespaces
  • Curious, thoughtful, articulate, and accountable
  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path
  • Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long
  • Located in an APAC time zone (the remote role can be filled from anywhere in APAC time zones)
  • Senior-level candidates for this role must have a strong understanding of containers and the kernel semantics and capabilities that underpin them

Nice to have

  • Experience with LXC/LXD
