Key highlights
- Requires 5+ years of experience with AWS and Terraform
- Owning the AWS platform for large-scale RDS/Aurora deployments
- Fully remote work with no daily travel required
- Competitive total rewards package and substantial training allowance
- Proficiency in AWS networking (VPC, Subnets, Transit Gateways) is a must
- Automate operational tasks using Python or Go
Role overview
Responsibilities
- Act as the escalation point when clients or internal teams break their Terraform, break their pipeline, or don't follow documented process — diagnose the actual problem and get them unblocked.
- Write clear Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports for significant incidents.
- Build and maintain Terraform for provisioning AWS database infrastructure (RDS/Aurora), and the GitLab/Harness pipelines that deploy it.
- Maintain the supporting tooling that manages database users and schemas, ensuring it stays correctly integrated with the databases it manages.
- Automate recurring operational work with Python or Go.
- Apply AWS security best practices — IAM roles, KMS encryption, Security Groups, Network ACLs — across managed environments.
- Build and improve the incident-response tooling so support queries get automatically routed to the right place, rather than landing on the person who is on call.
- Own and improve documentation — runbooks, operational guides, disaster recovery procedures — so people stop making the same mistakes.
Requirements
- 5+ Years of experience with AWS and Terraform in a production environment
- Provisioning AWS infrastructure through a CI/CD pipeline (GitLab, GitHub, Harness, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with RDS/Aurora operations — backup/restore, replication, disaster recovery — at the infrastructure level
- Solid understanding of AWS security and compliance controls
- Experience automating operational tasks with Python or Go
- Proficiency in AWS networking (VPC, Subnets, Transit Gateways)
- Comfortable being the person people come to when infrastructure or a pipeline is broken — clear communication under pressure, no hand-holding needed to trace a symptom to its root cause
- Successful applicant will need to fulfill the requirements necessary to obtain a background check

Additional details
- Pythian is a multinational company founded in 1997 that specializes in strategic database and analytics services, focusing on digital transformation and operational excellence.
- The company has built strong partnerships with Google Cloud, AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and Snowflake.
- This role sits on one of the largest database estates in the world, supporting one of our biggest clients — the kind of scale most infrastructure engineers never get direct access to.
- Changes made here affect a fleet, so the impact of good (and bad) engineering is outsized.
- The infrastructure/DevOps engineer will own the AWS platform our clients' RDS and Aurora databases run on — not the databases' internals.
- The role includes managing the Terraform and CI/CD pipeline (GitLab, Harness) that provisions them, maintaining supporting tooling for user and schema management, and acting as an escalation point for related issues.
- Accommodations are available upon request for candidates taking part in any aspect of the selection process.
- Pythian may utilize Enterprise Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools or features throughout its hiring process. All final hiring decisions remain the responsibility of human decision-makers.
