Role overview
The Staff Software Engineer at Oportun is a strategic and technical leadership role, combining expertise in software development with the ability to guide architectural decisions, mentor senior engineers, and contribute to the evolution of the technology stack. This role serves as the subject matter expert (SME) and 'go-to' person, operating with autonomy and accountability to deliver impactful solutions across product, platform, and infrastructure domains.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end delivery of complex software applications, ensuring adherence to best practices and high quality standards.
- Create frameworks and abstractions to reduce workload for other engineers, with documentation and tutorials for independent use.
- Identify and resolve improvements in test coverage for end-to-end business flows across multiple systems and teams.
- Introduce new tools, techniques, and coding patterns to engineers and drive adoption across teams.
- Drive technical decision-making and contribute to architectural discussions, proposing innovative solutions for complex challenges.
- Collaborate across teams to build systems addressing architectural gaps.
- Take ownership of critical projects, providing leadership and ensuring successful delivery through project management and communication.
- Engage with stakeholders to understand needs and navigate complexity and conflicting goals.
- Translate business requirements into efficient and scalable software solutions in collaboration with product managers, designers, and engineers.
- Lead cross-team efforts to deliver meaningful results across engineering, product, and design.
- Provide technical thought leadership, guidance, and mentorship to senior team members.
- Act as the technical counterpart to engineering managers, providing feedback to address team gaps.
- Advocate for technologies and processes that improve efficiency across multiple teams.
- Conduct rigorous code reviews to maintain code quality, performance, and maintainability.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements within the software development lifecycle.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and proactively introduce advancements to enhance products and services.
Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or a Master's degree with equivalent education and experience.
- Proven track record of delivering sophisticated software solutions in a leadership capacity.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Python, C++, or similar.
- Mastery of data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
- Solid grasp of version control systems, such as Git.
- Proven ability to mentor and lead a team of engineers.
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Nice to have
- Demonstrated experience in web application development, RESTful APIs, and frontend technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
- Proficiency in working with relational databases and SQL.
- Experience with cloud technologies, preferably AWS or Azure.
