Role overview
Canonical is hiring Python and Kubernetes Specialist Engineers to build open source data, workflow, AI/ML and analytics solutions for public cloud and private infrastructure. In this role, you will develop end-to-end MLOps and data analytics tools using popular open source platforms like Kubeflow, MLFlow, Airflow, and ClickHouse, while collaborating with a fully distributed global team of engineers, designers and product managers. The role includes twice-yearly in-person team sprints in global locations, and requires occasional travel for company events.
Responsibilities
- Build end-to-end data analytics and MLOps solutions using popular open source tools including Kubeflow, MLFlow, DVC, Feast, Apache SuperSet, dbt, Airflow, Temporal, Apache Trino, and ClickHouse, deployed on servers, public/private clouds, Kubernetes, developer desktops, or as web services
- Develop understanding of the full Linux stack, including kernel, networking, storage, and application layer components
- Design, build and maintain solutions deployed on public and private clouds and local workstations
- Master distributed systems concepts including observability, identity, and tracing
- Work with Kubernetes and machine-oriented open source applications
- Collaborate proactively with a distributed team of engineers, designers and product managers
- Debug issues and interact publicly with upstream and Ubuntu communities
- Generate and discuss ideas, and collaborate on identifying effective solutions
Requirements
- Professional or academic experience delivering software using Python
- Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
- Undergraduate degree in a technical subject, or a compelling narrative of an alternative chosen career path
- Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation
- Track record of exceeding expectations to achieve outstanding results
- Passion for technology evidenced by personal projects and initiatives
- Strong work ethic and confidence to perform alongside motivated colleagues
- Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
- Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability

- Proven track record of building highly automated machine learning solutions, data pipelines, or orchestrating workflows for the cloud
- Hands-on experience with machine learning libraries or tools
- Experience with container technologies (Docker, LXD, Kubernetes, etc.)
- Experience with public clouds (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
- Working knowledge of cloud computing
- Passionate about software quality and testing
- Experience working on an open source project
