Role overview

The Senior DBA - Fabric EDW is responsible for the maintenance, reliability, performance, cost management, and operational leadership of the Microsoft Fabric Enterprise Data Warehouse environment. This role focuses on keeping the Fabric EDW instance available, performant, secure, governed, and cost-effective while supporting analytics, reporting, data integration, and member-facing data capabilities. Reporting directly to the Director - EDW , this position partners with data engineering, architecture, product, analytics, security, and operations teams to manage platform health, resolve production issues, support capacity planning, and enable new Microsoft Fabric features and capabilities in a controlled, reliable manner.

Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day operational health of the Fabric EDW environment, including uptime, availability, incident response, service continuity, and production readiness.
  • Monitor Fabric EDW workloads, pipelines, SQL endpoints, warehouses, lakehouses, semantic models, and related platform components to identify availability, latency, performance, and reliability risks.
  • Lead performance tuning activities for Fabric and SQL workloads, including query optimization, workload analysis, indexing or design recommendations where applicable, and root cause analysis of performance bottlenecks.
  • Perform capacity management for Fabric workloads, including utilization review, capacity planning, scaling recommendations, throttling analysis, and proactive identification of growth constraints.
  • Analyze Fabric cost drivers, usage patterns, capacity consumption, and operational trends; provide recommendations to improve cost efficiency without compromising availability or performance.
  • Establish and maintain monitoring, alerting, runbooks, operational dashboards, support procedures, and health checks for the Fabric EDW platform.
  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of production issues impacting EDW availability, data access, performance, capacity, or downstream reporting and analytics consumption.
  • Evaluate, pilot, and enable new Microsoft Fabric features and capabilities in partnership with architecture, security, governance, and engineering teams.
  • Define and promote operational standards, platform guardrails, naming conventions, support models, and best practices for Fabric EDW usage.
  • Partner with data engineers and integration teams to ensure new workloads are designed for maintainability, observability, performance, cost awareness, and production supportability.
  • Support data governance, access management, data protection, auditability, and compliance requirements for the Fabric EDW environment.
  • Mentor team members on Fabric operational practices, performance troubleshooting, capacity awareness, and production support expectations.
  • Communicate platform health, risks, incidents, recommendations, and operational priorities clearly to the EDW Director and other stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and adhere to the Code of Conduct, Mission, and Value Statement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field; equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Relevant experience in database administration, data platform operations, data warehousing, or enterprise data platform support.
  • Experience supporting production SQL Server, cloud data warehouse, analytics, or Microsoft Fabric environments.
  • Experience with operational monitoring, incident management, performance tuning, capacity planning, cost analysis, and production support processes.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams including data engineering, architecture, analytics, product, security, infrastructure, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong SQL and T-SQL skills, including query analysis, troubleshooting, stored procedures, views, execution plan review, and performance tuning.
  • SQL Server experience, including database administration concepts, workload management, indexing fundamentals, data access patterns, and operational support.
  • Microsoft Fabric experience or strong experience with comparable cloud data warehouse and lakehouse platforms.
  • Experience managing platform uptime, operational readiness, incident response, production support, and service reliability for data platforms.
  • Performance tuning experience across SQL, data warehouse, reporting, semantic, or pipeline workloads.
  • Capacity management experience, including utilization analysis, workload forecasting, scale planning, and performance/capacity tradeoff recommendations.
  • Cost analysis experience for data platforms, including identifying cost drivers, usage patterns, optimization opportunities, and executive-level recommendations.
  • Ability to evaluate and safely enable new platform capabilities, including testing, documentation, guardrails, rollout planning, and stakeholder communication.
  • Strong documentation, troubleshooting, communication, and ownership skills.
  • Operational leadership mindset with strong accountability for platform availability, reliability, performance, cost efficiency, and customer impact.
  • Ability to balance urgent production support needs with longer-term platform improvement, modernization, and cost optimization priorities.
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills with the ability to translate platform metrics, logs, query behavior, and usage trends into practical recommendations.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions, influence standards, and guide teams toward supportable, performant, and cost-conscious Fabric EDW patterns.
  • Collaborative work style with the ability to partner across engineering, architecture, security, analytics, infrastructure, finance, operations, and business teams.
  • Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations to leadership and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to data protection, governance, auditability, documentation, and disciplined change management.
  • Continuous learning mindset with interest in Microsoft Fabric roadmap, cloud data platform operations, performance engineering, governance, and automation.

  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric Capacity Metrics, workload monitoring, SQL analytics endpoints, Fabric Warehouse, Lakehouse, Data Factory, notebooks, semantic models, and Power BI integration patterns.
  • Experience with OneLake architecture, shortcuts, lakehouse patterns, data retention, and storage organization.
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview, data cataloging, lineage, sensitivity classification, governance workflows, or access reviews.
  • Experience with Fabric Data Agents, Copilot-related capabilities, or other emerging Fabric tooling.
  • Experience with automation, scripting, CI/CD, source control, environment management, deployment practices, and infrastructure-as-code concepts.
  • Experience designing operational dashboards, SLA/SLO reporting, cost dashboards, capacity trend reporting, or executive platform health summaries.
  • Experience supporting disaster recovery, backup/restore patterns, business continuity planning, and data platform resilience practices.
  • Healthcare, supply chain, GPO, enterprise analytics, or member-facing data platform experience is preferred.
