Firebolt is open, real-time datalake infrastructure, combining the performance of a real-time system with the openness of a datalake. Customers run all their workloads on one platform, using open file formats (Vortex) and open metadata (DuckLake), with zero vendor lock-in. The Customer Engineer intern role sits at the intersection of deep technical problem-solving and enterprise customer success, with the potential to convert into a full-time Customer Engineer position after a 3-month internship.
Responsibilities
- Investigating incidents, debugging performance, tracing logs, and reading execution plans to get to root cause.
- Conducting discovery calls, POCs, migrations, and acting as the trusted technical advisor for accounts.
- Representing Firebolt to the wider engineering audience through public technical work.
- Tuning queries, applying indexing and partitioning strategies, and reading execution plans to make real-time workloads fast.
- Planning and executing data migration, including CDC pipelines, and helping build drop-in migrations from other analytical databases.
- Building agentic workflows and tooling that make customer onboarding, diagnostics, and support faster and more repeatable.
- Owning POCs and technical evaluations end-to-end, from architecture design through to a working proof on the customer’s data.
Requirements
- Strong SQL and a solid grasp of analytical database fundamentals: query optimization, indexing, partitioning.
- Familiarity with data migration concepts and CDC pipelines (hands-on experience is a plus, not a requirement).
- Interest in building agentic workflows/automation: turning repetitive technical tasks into tools.
- Clear communication: ability to explain tricky technical findings to an engineer on a call and write it up cleanly afterward.
- A customer-first instinct: desire to own the outcome.
Nice to have
- Exposure to real-time or embedded analytics, or ML/AI on live data.
- Experience with open table/file formats (Iceberg, Parquet) or lakehouse architectures.
- Any public technical work: blog posts, talks, open-source contributions, benchmarks.
Additional details
- Duration & location: 3-month internship, fully remote.
- Conversion: Full-time Customer Engineer role for interns who prove a strong fit.
